Once you are sure you are pregnant there are people you can talk to if you are considering an abortion. The following services can help you:

• the fpa unplanned pregnancy counselling service in Northern Ireland
• a contraception or sexual health clinic
• a young people’s clinic (there will be an upper age limit)
• your general practice
• a private abortion clinic (you can refer yourself to these clinics).

Abortions can be done free on the NHS but you will need a referral to the abortion service. If you don’t want to go to your general practice or you are not registered it is best to seek help from a contraceptive clinic in the area where you live. This can help avoid delays in referring you for an abortion or you can go to private abortion clinic.

Abortion statistics, England and Wales: 2008

The Department of Health has published statistics on abortion for 2008. Figures show the under-16 abortion rate was 4.2 and the under-18 rate was 18.9 per 1,000 women, both lower than in 2007. The rate was highest at 36 per 1,000 for women age 19, the same as in 2007.
